South Mavora Lake is the first major lake reached on Mavora Lakes Road and provides camping, picnic space and walking beside the Mararoa River and beech forest. It is a practical starting point for short walks and longer routes, including connections with Te Araroa and the Mavora–Greenstone Walkway. Check DOC camping, fire and road conditions before leaving State Highway 94.
